Install
Requirements, installing with uv, upgrading, and what happens outside a Herdr workspace.
Captain Barbossa is a Python CLI installed with uv. It drives agent CLIs you already have signed in, so there is nothing else to configure.
Requirements#
- macOS or Linux, Python 3.11 or newer.
- uv.
- Herdr, as your terminal workspace.
- Claude Code, Codex, pi, and/or Grok — installed and already signed in. Captain Barbossa never handles a provider login.
Install#
uv tool install captain-barbossaIf your shell cannot find captain afterward, run uv tool update-shell and restart the terminal.
Upgrade#
captain updateThis runs uv tool upgrade captain-barbossa. A captain that is already running keeps the old code until you restart it with captain --session <session-id>, so an upgrade never changes behaviour under a live session.
Outside a Herdr workspace#
Running captain outside Herdr offers to bootstrap one rather than failing. If Herdr is missing it asks before running Herdr's installer, then opens a workspace at the project, starts a captain there with the same --agent, --session, and --prompt, and attaches your terminal to it.
Declining, or running non-interactively, leaves the original error untouched. Nothing is installed without a yes.
Optional: Graphify#
Graphify enables captain memory query. Everything else in memory works without it.
uv tool install graphifyyVerify#
captain --version
captain init # writes a commented .captain/settings.tomlcaptain init needs no Herdr pane, so it is a safe first command from any shell. It never overwrites an existing settings file.
